70's

In the 70’s we had a lot of changes in the music context. We can say that the 70’s are remembered by the begining of the Punk movement, the glam rock, the hard rock(some people say it is just a distorcion of the blues and rock) and the disco music, the consolidation of progressive rock and other very important facts.
Dividing it we can explain it better, let’s start with the Punk movement!

PUNK MOVEMENT
In the punk movement we had some great bands like “The Kinks”, “The Clash”, “Sex Pistols” and“Ramones”. The songs are usually with just a few chords(most of them power chords), rebel lyrics and also very short. The members of the band had the custom to wear torn clothes, boots, black leather jackets which was a custom of every member of this movement.

GLAM ROCK
Some people might not know the term “glam rock” but they know exactly what it is.
The “glam” comes from glamour. The artists used to mix music and fashion to impress the public. A classic example is David Bowie with his clothes and make up.

Another famous artist associated with the “glam rock” is the singer and pianist Elton John.

HARD ROCK
Is a very famous genre and with a very big list of bands. The main caracteristics are: A heavy guitar with several riffs, complex solos, the formation with a drummer, guitarrist, bassist and singer. Besides the fact that exists a heavy guitar in this genre we can not confuse it with heavy metal because hard rock has several conections with the blues and the swing music.
Of all the bands we can list Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Kiss, Rush, AC/DC, Aerosmith and Van Halen(with the monster skills of the master Eddie Van Halen!!!)

DISCO MUSIC
It started in dance clubs, most of them fo the black, latin or gay community. But in a short time it became so popular in the West of the world. In this genre there are some bands that are very famous and some other bands with just one or two famous singles.
We can list as famous bands: ABBA, Bee Gees, The Jackson 5.

PROGRESSIVE ROCK
This genre became very appreciated because it puts together some popular elements such as a popular song structure  and some very refined elements as instruments of the classic music, blues and jazz. Besides the fact the the song structure was popular, between the songs we had some songs with a very complex form and they were all connected. Sometimes it is all so well bonded that we cannot say when a music ends and the other one starts
One band that could do this very well is Pink Floyd. Albuns like “The Dark Side of The Moon” had one single story told in the whole album and it sounds like a 50 minute song.

After all this we can say that the 70’s contribuited with a very rich addition to the music!

60’s

Some people say that what was done in the 60’s is what defined the new way to make songs. There were some great bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones such as great festivals like Woodstock.

The rock ‘n’ roll raised in people taste and we had some English rock bands begining in  the rock world. We saw some protest songs like Bob Dylan’s.
Beatlemania is phenomenon that happened thanks to the popularity of The Beatles, their songs arrived in all world and it became a success in every single place. They are considered the most successfull band in popular music history.

Another band that reached success is The Beach Boys. Their albuns were very complex for that time when we talk about recording. Brian Wilson with his techniques made history and carried lots of fans since the 60’s. They also were a huge influence for The Beatles.

Psychedelia was not off the 60’s. Not at all! The Doors explored it very well with Pink Floyd. In fact, the 60’s were the most psychodelic period of Pink Floyd when Syd Barret was still in the band.  Not to mention the use of LSD to make songs and performance concerts. Woodstock represented this reality very well.

Jimi Hendrix, the Best guitarrist of all times started his carreer in the 60’s and created a new way to make songs and to perform.
