The beggining of 00s was directed influenced by 90s. Many of the bands and solo artists remained active and numerous younger colleagues joined them in the music.

On the 90's, every people have his own life style and way of dress and it coincided a lot with the music that they listen. The main music style that influenced on this was Grunge and Dance.

The Grunge was a music movement that changed the rock in the world quickly. Everything starts in state of Seattle, USA, with many young guys angry with the system and the society. Themes such as social alienation, apathy and desire of freedom, associated with the sloppy style of dress and without the theatrical behavior in the stages, grunge influenced people and bands of all the world. We can quote Nirvana, Soundgarden and Mudhoney like the pioneers, followed by Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and posterior Silverchair, Creed and Foo Fighters.

The Dance started in Europe and was very divulgated in Brazil by Jovem Pan Radio. Listened principally on disco shows, it was part of youth of many people. With Disco coming too the pop teen, detaching the Spice Girls, the Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, ‘N Sync, the Hanson and Britney Spears. And sure, Michael Jackson that have the bigger number of disc sold with Dangerous.

Getting back to rock, we have the arising and success of bands like The Cranberries, R.E.M. and after Queens Of The Stone Age. In England, we have Oasis, Blur and Radiohead that enter with total strong in the world music.

On punk rock style we have the success of Bad Religion and The Offspring, followed by American pop punk rock bands created on that time, like Green Day, Blink-182 and the Canadian Sum 41. We have something called metal alternative that arrived with Rage Against The Machine, that carp the govern, the capitalism and do a great mess in their shows.

Metallica, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers have good productions and success in this time. In Canadian again, we have woman singers Alannis Morisset and after Avril Lavigne that was very listen. The rock 90's was very supported by MTV, that launch the most bands of the time.

80’s

In 1981 the MTV was founded and brought a new way to enjoy the music, with video clips. The first video ever played on MTV“Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles. MTV gave bands and artists greater exposure for their music, making a lot of artists famous through the world.

A lot of music styles appear in 80s, here we can quote:

The New Have, one of the biggest movements of the early 80s grew out of the punk movement of 70s. New Wave music was a mix, with punk, dance and other styles and made for some great pop music. The synthesizer was the instrument that was used a lot, and the music was danceable and fun. Some of the notable groups of the 80s include Duran Duran, New Order, Human League, the B-52's, Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode, INXS, the Police and many more.

Metal, another big piece of 80s, became popular in 80’s but still having a strong influence in actual days. Bands like Def Leopard, Poison, Motley Crew, Cinderella, Quiet Riot, Whitesnake, the Scorpions, and so many more were not only know from their music, but they all had big hair, creating the term "hair bands."

Pop and Rock, artists like Jovi, U2, Bruce Springsteen, R.E.M., and Aerosmith all had hot strings of memorable hits in the 80's. Soloists Bryan Adams, Eddie Money, Sammy Hagar, Billy Joel, Tina Turner, Elton John, and Stevie Nicks all added their sounds to the mix, as well. More pop-sounding acts to hit it big included J. Geils Band, Huey Lewis and the News, Men at Work, and Stray Cats.

Rap, at the beginning of the decade, was just beginning to take its' hold on the music scene, as well. Early rap acts such as Sugar Hill Gang, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and Curtis Blow crossed over with such rap classics as "Rapper's Delight", "The Message", and "The Breaks", respectively. In 1986 the genre took off and by the end of the decade, the term Hip Hop would be the new name for the genre as it continued to expand musically.

Finally, in Brazil, we highlight about the Rock in Rio, occurred in 1985 and have influenced rock bands and artists, like Legião Urbana, Ultraje a rigor, Engenheiros do Hawaii, Titãs, RPM, Claudio Zoli, Rita Lee, Paralamas do Sucesso, Barao Vermelho and others.

70's

In the 70’s we had a lot of changes in the music context. We can say that the 70’s are remembered by the begining of the Punk movement, the glam rock, the hard rock(some people say it is just a distorcion of the blues and rock) and the disco music, the consolidation of progressive rock and other very important facts.
Dividing it we can explain it better, let’s start with the Punk movement!

PUNK MOVEMENT
In the punk movement we had some great bands like “The Kinks”, “The Clash”, “Sex Pistols” and“Ramones”. The songs are usually with just a few chords(most of them power chords), rebel lyrics and also very short. The members of the band had the custom to wear torn clothes, boots, black leather jackets which was a custom of every member of this movement.

GLAM ROCK
Some people might not know the term “glam rock” but they know exactly what it is.
The “glam” comes from glamour. The artists used to mix music and fashion to impress the public. A classic example is David Bowie with his clothes and make up.

Another famous artist associated with the “glam rock” is the singer and pianist Elton John.

HARD ROCK
Is a very famous genre and with a very big list of bands. The main caracteristics are: A heavy guitar with several riffs, complex solos, the formation with a drummer, guitarrist, bassist and singer. Besides the fact that exists a heavy guitar in this genre we can not confuse it with heavy metal because hard rock has several conections with the blues and the swing music.
Of all the bands we can list Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Kiss, Rush, AC/DC, Aerosmith and Van Halen(with the monster skills of the master Eddie Van Halen!!!)

DISCO MUSIC
It started in dance clubs, most of them fo the black, latin or gay community. But in a short time it became so popular in the West of the world. In this genre there are some bands that are very famous and some other bands with just one or two famous singles.
We can list as famous bands: ABBA, Bee Gees, The Jackson 5.

PROGRESSIVE ROCK
This genre became very appreciated because it puts together some popular elements such as a popular song structure  and some very refined elements as instruments of the classic music, blues and jazz. Besides the fact the the song structure was popular, between the songs we had some songs with a very complex form and they were all connected. Sometimes it is all so well bonded that we cannot say when a music ends and the other one starts
One band that could do this very well is Pink Floyd. Albuns like “The Dark Side of The Moon” had one single story told in the whole album and it sounds like a 50 minute song.

After all this we can say that the 70’s contribuited with a very rich addition to the music!

60’s

Some people say that what was done in the 60’s is what defined the new way to make songs. There were some great bands like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones such as great festivals like Woodstock.

The rock ‘n’ roll raised in people taste and we had some English rock bands begining in  the rock world. We saw some protest songs like Bob Dylan’s.
Beatlemania is phenomenon that happened thanks to the popularity of The Beatles, their songs arrived in all world and it became a success in every single place. They are considered the most successfull band in popular music history.

Another band that reached success is The Beach Boys. Their albuns were very complex for that time when we talk about recording. Brian Wilson with his techniques made history and carried lots of fans since the 60’s. They also were a huge influence for The Beatles.

Psychedelia was not off the 60’s. Not at all! The Doors explored it very well with Pink Floyd. In fact, the 60’s were the most psychodelic period of Pink Floyd when Syd Barret was still in the band.  Not to mention the use of LSD to make songs and performance concerts. Woodstock represented this reality very well.

Jimi Hendrix, the Best guitarrist of all times started his carreer in the 60’s and created a new way to make songs and to perform.
